Bridal salons know all about the look: that moment of recognition as a bride-to-be sees herself in the wedding gown of her dreams... Let's face it: Most of us do not have perfect figures. But whether we have extra curves that we seek to camouflage or issues with height or skinniness, the right dress can provide that magic moment...

The first thing to decide is which feature to accentuate, says Roseanna Martino, owner of The Altered Bride in Boston. "Some women love their bustlines; some love their waistlines," she says. And brides should decide if they have a feature they'd rather try to hide.

Dream Weavers

While fabric choice can certainly affect the hang and cut of a wedding gown, brides of all sizes have options...
Still, the basic rule of thumb is that matte fabrics without ornamentation are better for camouflaging a brides problem areas. Very clingy fabrics -such as chiffon- can be problematic for all but the most petite women. Roseanna Martino, owner of The Altered Bride in Boston, recommends heavier fabrics to de-emphasize unwanted curves.

The Finishing Touches

Brides who opt for a veil can influence their overall appearance with it's style and length. Long, chapel-length veils, for example, "lengthen the line," giving a sleeker look to the bridal ensemble, says Roseanna Martino, owner of The Altered Bride in Boston. Shorter and more petite brides in particular benefit from this illusion, as long as there isn't too much fabric around the face to overwhelm the look.
